Crisis, Community, and Performance: Building a Resilient Society

Emphasis this year swung to cultural activism in a time of social crisis: “economic collapse, community impoverishment and joblessness, the educational vacuum, the prison industrial complex, the threatened loss of democratic ideals, the border wars, the Middle Eastern conflict—where do we look for answers as cultural producers?” Attention turned to the role of trauma and crisis in society, to stories of survival, to the meeting of the U.S. Social Forum in Michigan, to “women rising” in New Mexico. Not only was it necessary to work with community, academic and labor-related organizers to produce cultural work relevant to people’s needs; we needed to “develop a critique of culture as practiced today, and a vision of the more human, collective, supportive work we seek for the future.”
